The Challenge:
The Wallerawang site housed two 12 cell cooling towers. Due to the age of the existing frame members one of the towers suffered a substantial structural collapse. The challenge for Breezewater was to ensure that the sister cooling tower, which was of a similar age and condition, did not suffer the same fate.
The Solution:
The highly experienced engineering team at Breezewater were the first to be contacted by the onsite engineers with a view to assessing what had gone wrong with the collapsed cooling tower. The Breezewater engineering team were tasked with finding the resolution. The solution was a strengthening programme for both towers. With an extremely tight nine week timeframe, the Breezewater team ensured that this was achieved.
The Outcome:
Breezewater delivered an independant vertical load transfer frame that was modularised so it could be installed within the existing cooling tower frame with a minimum of modifications to the frame. Within the nine weeks Breezewater successfully managed a programme from Design to Fabrication to Installation. Once the refurbishment had been completed on the 7B tower the client was able to operate at 75% capacity of unit 7 turbine due to corrective work executed and favourable ambient operating conditions.
